This award was established in 2011 to recognize a woman for her efforts to promote the advancement of women in the communications profession, which is the mission of the Matrix Foundation. In 2011, it was presented in honor of the late Christy Bulkeley, WICI Past President (1974-75) and National Headliner (1978).
Bulkeley, who died in 2009 of ovarian cancer at age 67, was a renowned journalist who broke barriers as one of a very few female newspaper publishers in the U.S. in the 1970s. She was Vice President of the Gannett Foundation in Washington from 1985-92, and was the first woman to become a chief executive officer of a Gannett-owned newspaper, the Danville (Il) Commercial-News (1976) at the same time she served as vice president of Gannet’s central U.S. papers.
